It is for everyone a fascinating matter to observe how Murtić's painting craft manages to penetrate, to make use of and then to outdo the greatest movements in abstract painting after 1945. Of Abstract Expressionism, Murtić internalized the powerful sensitivity for colour and graphic strength. Action Painting and COBRA inspired him with a powerful and exultant movement. Finally, Lyrical Abstraction became an irresistible instrument for the attainment of poetic and spiritual altitudes.
From 1980 on, Murtić was once again painting landscapes, concentrating his energy on the lyrical changes of the physical world; each basic sign of abstraction was put into motion in his compositions, which regularly evoke an intensely Mediterranean region.
