This town has long ago ceased to doubt Murtić, though it took him as a symbol of something it doesn’t understand. It’s a long time now since the city said: I have a painter that I don’t always understand, but a painter who I know is not going to let me down; I have a fellow-citizen that has created the whole of a world.
Oskar Davičo had this to say about the painter: “Murtić’s art is such, we don’t ask it, it doesn’t ask us, it doesn’t ask for recognition, doesn’t arouse memories. What is more, it leaves us the way we are, satisfied with our security, indifferent to our insecurity. Murtić’s paintings win without inflicting defeats.”
