Not only in his own generation but also among the contemporary Yugoslav artists, Edo Murtić is one of the best known painters. His reputation is based o many exhibitions in Yugoslavia and success abroad, in Europe and America, but even more so on his important role and active participation in the formation of Yugoslav art after the Second World War. He belongs to that group of Yugoslav artists who have brought liveliness and verve to Yugoslav painting and who energetically opposed, during the decisive years, academism of all shades. At the right moment they pointed to new possibilities of expression which were abundantly developed later.
